Session 8: Pursuing Peace in the Home - A Biblical Foundation for Parents

Session 8 on peace in our homes reminds us that biblical peace is radically different from the world's definition. While the dictionary defines peace as freedom from disturbance based on our circumstances, Scripture reveals that true peace transcends our situations entirely. We're pointed to Philippians 4:6-7, which promises that God's peace surpasses all understanding and guards our hearts and minds. The session beautifully illustrates this through the story of Peter walking on water in Matthew 14. When Peter kept his eyes fixed on Jesus, he walked on impossible waves. The moment he focused on the wind and circumstances, he began to sink. This becomes a profound picture for our parenting journey: our children are watching from the boat, observing whether we keep our eyes on Jesus or get consumed by the chaos around us. The fruit of the Spirit includes peace, reminding us that this isn't something we naturally possess but must receive from the Holy Spirit. We're challenged to practice two key disciplines: identifying what's stealing our peace and immediately giving it to God, and recounting God's faithfulness in past situations. When we model authentic dependence on God—even pausing to pray before disciplining in anger—our children learn that peace comes from the Prince of Peace Himself. This isn't about perfect parenting but about pointing our families toward the only true source of lasting peace.
