Session 6: Intentional Communication - Building Trust and Faith in Your Home
Session 6 centers on the vital importance of intentional communication within our families, beginning with the foundational truth from Mark 12:28-31 that we are called to love God passionately and love people on purpose. What makes this teaching so compelling is the reminder that we cannot give what we do not have—before we can become effective communicators with our children, we must first learn to communicate with our Heavenly Father through His Word and prayer. This session explores four primary purposes for communication in our homes: enjoying and knowing our children, providing discipline and correction, preparing them for challenges ahead, and teaching and encouraging them. Throughout, we're reminded that our words carry tremendous power, as James 3:3-10 vividly illustrates with the imagery of the tongue as a small rudder directing a large ship or a small fire setting ablaze an entire forest. The practical wisdom shared includes being mindful of which words we choose, how we deliver them, the timing of our conversations, and the critical importance of truly listening to our children. Perhaps most convicting is the call to 'fix our faces'—to control our reactions when our children come to us with questions or confessions, ensuring we remain safe, trustworthy people they can approach about anything. We end with the beautiful reminder that while we cannot tame our tongues in our own strength, the Holy Spirit can guide our words to bring life rather than death, building up rather than tearing down.
