Session 9: Raising Children with Christ-Like Character
What if the most important work we do as parents isn't filling our children's schedules with activities, but building their character through intentional moments of growth? This powerful session on parenting challenges us to shift our focus from external achievements to internal transformation. Drawing from Deuteronomy 6:6-9, we're reminded that spiritual formation happens in everyday moments—when we're at home, on the road, going to bed, and getting up. The heart of this session reveals that our children are not just our responsibility, but our neighbors, deserving the same love, patience, and grace that Scripture calls us to extend to everyone around us. We learn that character development requires three essential skills: being good wrestlers who aren't afraid of difficult conversations, being skilled negotiators who can disarm tension with wisdom, and being clever parents who mold and shape with intentionality. We are warned against the Pharisee trap from Matthew 23—being more concerned with the outward appearance of our children while neglecting their hearts. Instead, we're called to create space for our kids to stretch their muscles, to fail and learn, to wrestle with ideas and questions, all while we position ourselves as guides pointing them toward Christ. This approach to parenting isn't about perfection; it's about presence, intentionality, and trusting the Holy Spirit to lead us through each unique situation with each unique child.
