Lesson 7: The Blade and the Filter

What does it truly mean to hear from God, and how do we know when a word is genuinely from Him rather than from our own desires? This session takes us deep into the process of discerning God's voice by exploring two powerful concepts: letting the Bible read us, and navigating the tension between what we might call the prophetic and the pathetic. Drawing from Hebrews 4:12-13, we are reminded that the Word of God is not merely a text we analyze but a living, active force that turns the blade inward, exposing the motives and intentions we often hide even from ourselves. The Holy Spirit does not simply illuminate scripture for our information but uses it as a scalpel to divide between soul and spirit, between what we want and what God is actually saying. We also walk through a fascinating and often overlooked moment in Acts 21, where a genuine prophetic word from Agabus becomes entangled with the very human love and fear of those around Paul. The result is a compelling picture of how soul noise, our emotions, attachments, and well-meaning instincts, can wrap itself around a true word from God and distort its meaning. This is not a failure of faith but a deeply human reality that every one of us navigates. The invitation here is not to distrust God but to distrust our unexamined inner life enough to let Him search it.
