Session 1: Philippians 1:1-11

What does it look like to live with genuine, unshakeable joy in a world that seems to be running on empty? That is the question at the heart of our journey through Philippians, and the answer might surprise us. This letter was written from a Roman prison by a man in chains, and yet it radiates a contagious, overflowing joy that has nothing to do with comfortable circumstances. The key distinction we explore is the difference between happiness and joy. Happiness, as the world pursues it, is always tethered to our wants and needs. But true, divine joy is tethered to Jesus alone. That is the one variable that gets us through absolutely anything. We also discover how the church in Philippi came to be, and it is a story that reframes the way we think about closed doors. Paul never planned to go to Philippi. God redirected him, again and again, until he found himself in a city he never intended to visit. And from that redirection, a church was born out of a small group of women praying by a river, a delivered slave girl, and a jailer asking the most important question anyone can ask. The lesson is clear: a closed door from God is not the worst thing in the world. It may be the very thing that leads us to something greater than we could have planned for ourselves.
