Session 5: The Art of Neighboring Well

What happens when loving our neighbor gets messy? This session reminds us that neighboring isn't always about pleasant coffee conversations and easy friendships—sometimes it requires forgiveness, boundaries, and perseverance through conflict. Drawing from Romans 12:14-21, we're challenged to bless those who persecute us, live peaceably with all people, and never take revenge. The distinction between being responsible TO our neighbors versus responsible FOR them is transformative: we're called to love, encourage, and serve them, but not to control their outcomes or bear their consequences. The session explores how unforgiveness becomes like poison in our own hearts, clogging our connection with God, while true forgiveness—different from merely excusing bad behavior—frees us vertically before it ever restores relationships horizontally. We're reminded that the Great Commandment to love our neighbor as ourselves doesn't come with conditions based on their behavior, and that Jesus raised the bar even higher in John 13, commanding us to love one another as He has loved us. This isn't about waiting for the perfect neighborhood or the perfect moment—it's about investing where God has placed us right now, even if it's temporary, just as the exiles in Jeremiah 29 were told to build, plant, and work for the prosperity of the city where they were sent.
