3. How Do I Grow Spiritually?
We recognize growth in the physical world all around us. We observe how plants grow with water, good soil, and exposure to the sun. We observe how children grow through good nutrition, exercise, and rest. God desires that we grow spiritually as well. Consider these ways to experience spiritual GROWTH:
Guard your Heart – The Bible gives us great wisdom when is says: “Guard your heart above all else, for it determines the course of your life†(Proverbs 4:23). We should be on guard against things like excesses in our life, evil in the world, and the enemy’s tactics to get us to give into doubt or destructive behavior.
Renew your Mind – Through consistent time reading and studying God’s word we build our faith and learn to experience spiritual victory. We also learn to discern God’s will and reject the competing voices of untruth in our life.
Obey the Spirit – The Bibles says that the children of God are led by the Spirit of God (Romans 8:14). At the moment of salvation, God sends his Spirit to indwell us. The Spirit helps us in ways like guiding us in daily living, comforting us in difficulty, empowering us to be a witness for Jesus, and assuring us of our salvation. As we apply the word of God and obey the Spirit’s prompting, we experience growth.
Worship Regularly – We were made to worship. If we don’t worship God, we will inevitably give our highest honor and devotion to something or someone else. But as we worship the Lord, we find that we are changed in his presence. We should seek to regularly worship with other believers as well as worship personally in our daily lives. Any moment can be an opportunity for worship if we recognize the presence and purposes of God in it.
Trust the Promises – We will inevitably experience difficulty in our lives. But the promises of God assure us that God will never leave us or forsake us. Difficulty is a chance for our faith to not suffer loss, but to grow as this passage teaches us: “When troubles of any kind come your way, consider it an opportunity for great joy. For you know that when your faith is tested, your endurance has a chance to grow. So let it grow, for when your endurance is fully developed, you will be perfect and complete, needing nothing†(James 1:2-4). So we need to regularly be putting the promises of God in our hearts and minds so that we can persevere when struggle comes.
Help Others – God desires to use us in the lives of others. We will find that some of the greatest joy and progress in our spiritual journey comes as we serve others in the name of Jesus. God has called us to take his love and message of hope and forgiveness to the ends of the earth. So find a way to serve others locally and globally to help advance the kingdom of God.
